Yankee Stadium and Shea

In case anyone's interested, the Lower Hudson Journal News has a nice package of coverage about Yankee and Shea stadiums, both of which are about to begin their final years of existence. Worth a look.

On a related note, every Yankee weekend home game is already sold out this year. But we did manage to snag tickets for the June 8 game against the Royals (thrilling).

Given that it'll likely be my last experience at the House That Ruth Built, I'm sure it will be somewhat bittersweet.

Citi Field looks like it will be nice, and Shea is certainly outdated. I haven't been to Yankee Stadium in years. Do you think it's time to be replaced? It's a little hard to stomach the millions the teams will be making off these new stadiums while the subway system is crumbling. The Mets are privately financing their stadium, I think, but the Yanks are getting a huge tax break and some public financing.

Well, I wasn't a huge fan of the old stadium, but I would have been more than happy to continue watching games there, for no other reason than nostalgia. It will be fun to explore the new park though.

On the financing subject, I don't recall exactly what the Yanks are and aren't paying for...but I know there are some open space issues up there, and actually I've read quite a few studies over the years that show new sports facilities do next to nothing for the economy. When sports teams get public assistance or financing for stadiums, even if it's just tax breaks or what-have-you, it's basically a form of theft. Especially when we're talking about the second-most-wealthy franchise in the country, in the case of the Yankees. Gold Star if you can guess which franchise is wealthiest...
